Our History

The Lois Stobbs Memorial Veterans 10K run/walk race is held in Wheeling, WV on the first Saturday in November. The race is a USA Track and Field sanctioned race. It is the last 6.2 miles of the Wheeling 20K course.

The idea for the race was sparked by race director Hugh Stobbs’ late wife, Lois. Hugh’s involvement in the Wheeling community, especially the running community, spans decades. He’s run over 56 marathons, four of those marathons were in Berlin, Amsterdam, London and Ontario, a 100 miler race and 50 miler race. Hugh was also a member of the Ohio County Board of Education for 22 years.

As his personal running career slowed down, Lois encouraged Hugh to stay involved while also making an impact on the Wheeling community. Thus, the Veterans Day 10K was established. Hugh’s wife passed away in 2014 and since then it has been renamed the Lois Stobbs Memorial Veterans 10K race.

  • Since its inception, over $80,000 has been donated to the West Virginia Chapter Paralyzed Veterans of America.
  • All active military personnel and veterans have the entry fee waived.

As of 2019, Paws for Purple Hearts is the co-recipient of the monies received. Paws for Purple Hearts is dedicated to improving the lives of America’s Warriors facing mobility challenges and trauma related conditions such as PTSD and TBI by providing the highest quality service dogs and canine assisted therapeutic programs.
